The Lakeside Park Carousel Opens for the Season

Victoria Day long weekend is an exciting time of year for Port Dalhousie locals as it marks the summer opening of the iconic Lakeside Park Carousel. The carousel is located right by the water and for only five cents a ride; you too can enjoy this century-old tradition.

Originally carved by Charles I.D. Looff between 1895 and 1905 in New York, the carousel was brought to Port Dalhousie in 1921 and has been there ever since. There are approximately 350 antique Looff carousels that are still operating in North America today – only nine of which are in Canada.

The Lakeside Park Carousel consists of four chariots and 68 animals, including; lions, camels, goats, giraffes and beautiful horses with tails made of real horsehair. The Friends of the Carousel, who continue to keep the carousel in working order each season, have carefully restored all the animals and keep up with proper maintenance throughout the season.

As you ride this dazzling antique, revel in the enchanting, classical melody that plays during the ride. The historic band organ plays tunes from fox trots to waltzes — all with paper music rolls, truly capturing a historic feel and transporting visitors back in time.

The Lakeside Park Carousel is open Saturdays, Sundays and most holidays all summer long from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.
